Why cold weather makes your joints hurt (and what helps)

February 24, 20262 min read

If your joints feel stiffer, achier, or more painful when it gets cold, you’re not imagining it.

Cold weather really can make pain feel worse — especially in the knees, hips, back, shoulders, and hands.

Here’s why👇

When it’s cold:
• Muscles tighten to help keep you warm
• Tight muscles pull on joints
• Blood flow slows down
• Joints don’t move or glide as easily
• Old injuries and sensitive areas get irritated faster

Less movement + less blood flow = more stiffness and pain.

That’s why you might notice:
• Trouble getting moving in the morning
• Aches that last longer than usual
• Pain flaring up in places you’ve hurt before and haven't hear from in a while

But here’s something important most people don’t hear:

Cold weather may trigger pain — but it’s rarely the true cause.

Pain is often linked to things wecaninfluence:
• How well your joints move
• Muscle strength and balance
• Old injuries that never fully healed
• How much (or how little) you move
• How your body handles stress and load

This is where hope comes in.

👉Cold weather does not cause new damage.

It changes how your nervous system, muscles, joints, and circulation behave.

And that means pain is not something you just have to “deal with.”

There are many things we can improve — even during the cold months.

Here are5 simple ways to help your body feel better this time of year:

1. Move often
Your body likes movement. Sitting too long makes stiffness worse.
Try gentle movement every 30–60 minutes — a short walk, stretching, or standing up.

2. Warm up before workouts (and daily tasks)
Cold muscles and tendons don’t like sudden movement.
Take 5–10 minutes to warm up before exercise — and even before things like shoveling, lifting, or long walks.

3. Keep your body warm
Warm muscles move better.
Layer up, use heat when needed, and keep joints like knees, hips, and shoulders covered.

4. Give yourself grace
Pain flares don’t mean you’re doing something wrong.
Cold weather can make things harder. Some days need lighter movement — and that’s okay.

5. Support your body — don’t ignore it
Pain is a signal, not a weakness.
Small changes in movement, strength, and habits can make a big difference over time.

Here’s the takeaway I want you to remember:

Pain does not mean you’re broken.
There are options. There are ways forward.
And a lot of this is changeable.

If cold weather has you feeling stuck or discouraged, know that you don’t have to wait for warmer days to feel better.
